A stubbed toe, a paper cut, hitting your funny bone. Who hasn’t experienced these small pains before?  But what happens when our aches won’t disappear even though their source is long gone?

Laura Bok, one of the original members of PainLab Munich, is fascinated by the human perception of pain. Most notably, she is on a mission to uncover the brain’s mechanisms surrounding the subjective nature of pain perception.

Discover your SENSE OF PAIN: What to expect

Pain is a useful sensation – if you touch the hot stove, you’d rather know that your skin is about to be burnt before it ends in a worse injury. But did you know that the amount of pain you feel can be different every day, and that it can be impacted by a wide variety of factors?

With this TEDxTUM adventure, you will get the chance to learn more about pain and how we perceive it from Laura Bok, a pain researcher at TUM whose knowledge about pain is seemingly endless. Our team also has some exclusive live experiments prepared for us to experience together – don’t worry, it won’t hurt!

The “Discover Your Sense of Pain” adventure is planned to take place on 18 May 2021. The event will take place virtually.

Laura Bok

Nobody likes to feel pain – still, we all do. Most people don’t like to think or talk about it either – such an unpleasant topic at dinner parties. For Laura Bok, this is different. As a neuroscientist and pain researcher, her thoughts revolve around pain in the human brain – a lot.

As a member of PainLab Munich since the very beginning, Laura’s work centers around examining the spectrum of pain—and why we can perceive it so differently from one moment to the next. As a researcher, Laura’s goal is to make this sort of information accessible to thinkers at all levels—whether you’re well-versed in neurology or a scientific layman. Because what’s clear is this: we all feel pain, and we should all be able to understand it.

As Laura’s work continues, she carries out neuropsychological evaluations with patients at TUM’s Klinikum rechts an der Isar, and has recently completed her training as a behavioral therapist.
